During the 1990’s many people talked about angels among us, in reference to celestial beings whose popularity came after the testimony of many people who see them or experienced any form of angelical contact. Today everybody can see angels, but on the body of people wearing angel tattoos. 

From traditional angels with religious connotations, to modern representations, these beings are truly with us. More than one person associates tattoos with a spiritual connection to be in touch with real angels. There are many TV shows, books, magazines and online stories narrating encounters of the celestial. 

Whatever the motivation angel tattoos are a manifestation of human connection with the divine. Back in 1993 Newsweek magazine said “angels are appearing everywhere in America”. Since then both, spiritual manifestations and tattoos have been increasingly present in everybody’s life. 

Angel tattoos can be small or large, representing female or male beings of any age. One of the most popular are Raphaelite Angels, Cupid evocations and Guardian Angels, often seen in detailed miniatures, as well as very large designs covering the chest, back, or on the upper arm. 

Most of the actual angel tattoos are inspired by classic art and well-known images from the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Some other angel images dating from the same era are stylized depictions, or modern adaptations to fit into the tattoo design. 

In fact, some angelical art is based only on angels’ wings or radiant aureoles designed with mastership, using special glowing pigments. Some people wear angel tattoos designed to cover their shoulders and sometimes resembling wings that may cover much of their back. 

Angel tattoos are not only celestial, many people prefer Gothic images of dark angels, whether mythological evocations or winged beings associated to Satanism and another religions or beliefs. This type of angel tattoos can be tattooed in classic poses, either resting, flying or within a complete scenario. 

Depending on the beliefs and the type of angel chosen for tattooing, angels represent protection or special powers, being an alternative to angel pins, amulets and talismans worn for many people as good luck charms over the past few years. In some urban cultures, angels may also represent a group or gang within the area. 

People who die become angels according to different religions. With this belief, some individuals take the picture of a late relative that becomes their angel tattoo, a way of permanent remembrance. However, younger people do not take celestial representations so seriously when it comes to tattooing, choosing cartoon angels that represent either their good or their evil side.
