Butterfly Tattoos

After the hippy movement of the 1960s and a pop song of the early 1970s titled simply as “Butterfly”, these tattoo designs became increasingly popular through the following decades. Originally worn by men and women, butterfly tattoos were adopting a well-defined female personality, being the favorites of women who wanted to wear a seductive tattoo onto their skin.

Butterflies usually come in a large variety of sizes and shapes that can be “writing” on ankles, hips, thighs, chest, abdomen, arms or lower back. Butterfly tattoos tend to be colorful and beautiful, although some people prefer black underlined designs with neutral colors or none, particularly when such tattoos for men and when it comes to old-fashioned individuals.

The great thing about butterfly tattoos is that these designs have no sexual connotation. Butterflies are beautiful and evoke sentimental moments, but virile men can wear them without having to feel embarrassed. In fact, many wrestlers are proud of wearing the most astounding butterflies, king-sized, on their back, arms or chest.

Small butterfly tattoos are more likely feminine, and it is usual to find them on women’s skin, often accompanied by flowers, whether on their ankles, arms, shoulders, breast, low back or low abdomen. Using modern tattoo machines, many women can wear miniatures with remarkable artistry.

Thin and delicate butterfly tattoos, or exuberant colorful tattoos of huge visual impact, can be combined with any other tattoo, because butterflies match well with almost everything. Even wearing a skull tattoo, you can add a Gothic butterfly for a full effect, or as a manifestation of tribal and Celtic art, as well as combined with other tattoo styles, including Hawaiian.

The Butterfly is such a beautiful insect that butterflies collectors is one of the most widespread hobbies, along with butterfly watching, an activity growing in popularity for nearly a whole decade. There are 5 basic families of butterflies, papilionidae, Pieridae, Lycaenidae, Riodinidae, and Nymphalidae. From them, there are between 15,000 and 20,000 common well-known species.
